Hi jeffkloy,
First off, Apple is a hardware company, so if you want Mac OS X, then you have to spring for Macintosh hardware. As far as USB peripherals, yes you can use most USB things (mouse, trackballs, dongles, speakers, microphones, etc.). You still have to be a little concerned with compatibility but many of these work without drivers. Best of luck to you.
